Dance for the Camera Film Series Begins Feb. 1
January 18, 2011
Press Release #11-004
The synthesis of dance and cinematography will be explored in a St. Mary’s College of Maryland spring semester film series called "Dance for the Camera." Sponsored by the Department of Theater, Film, and Media Studies, the series is free and open to the public. It includes three noontime programs February 1, March 1, and April 5 in the Screening Room of Montgomery Hall (MH111), and a full evening of short films April 11 at 8:15 p.m. at Cole Cinema in the Campus Center. You can go to one or go to all of them; feel free to bring lunch. For more information, contact Sharon Wyrrick at email@example.com, or 240-895-4237. A web link for the series can be found at: http://dancefilms.org/festival/dance-on-camera-on-tour/dance-on-camera-on-tour/st-marys-college-of-maryland/
"These artistic works of dance and movement depend on the camera’s capabilities for their realization," said Wyrrick, visiting assistant professor. "This allows the choreographer’s vision to go beyond what is possible on the stage."
The series showcases films made by choreographers, or by filmmakers collaborating with choreographers, including award-winning films spanning narrative, documentary, and experimental genres. It is presented with support from the college’s Arts Alliance in collaboration with the Dance Films Association, whose annual Dance On Camera Festival is presented in New York City.
