Can reconstruction of a destroyed cultural landmark serve to restore spirit to an entire country?

On Thursday, Nov. 1, at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, James Janowski, professor of philosophy at Hampden-Sydney College, will raise ethical and philosophical questions in his presentation on the possible reconstruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas statues in Afghanistan. The talk “Restoring Spirit: Dresden’s Frauenkirche as Model for Bamiyan’s Buddhas?” will take place at 8:15 p.m. in the college’s Cole Cinema. It is free and open to the public.

The lecture is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Democracy and the departments of Asian studies, philosophy and religious studies, and museum studies.
