KEYNOTE THEME: SUSTAINING AND REIMAGINING COMMUNITY IN A GLOBALIZING WORLD
The 2005 Keynote Speaker is June Nash, a pioneer of globalization studies in anthropology. Dr. Nash will be joined by senior and junior scholars from around the South, who are currently conducting research on this and related topics, including: Indigenous Enclaves, Diasporas, and Transnational Communities; Rituals of Communion and Alienation in Defining and Maintaining Community; Violence, Insurrection and the Construction or Destruction of Community; Cultural and Heritage Tourism: (Re) Shaping Community Identity; Institutional-Community Partnerships; Grassroots Movements and Community Sustainability.

SPECIAL EVENTS (see registration form): (a) preregistered Member Authors’ Book Display courtesy of University of Alabama Press and related SAS-sponsored Book Signing at the Society’s Saturday night Keynote and Awards Reception (with traditional entertainment) in the hotel’s historic, mirrored Silver Ballroom; (b) special session and preregistered guided tour of sustainable redevelopment projects and tourism sites in downtown Chattanooga; (c) preregistered student event with the Keynote Speaker and Symposia Panelists. Hotel Accommodations: A block of conference rooms at the Read House Hotel, a National Register-listed property in the heart of downtown Chattanooga, has been set aside at the rate of $89 per night/single or double room, if reserved by February 14 (same rate applicable two days before and after conference). - STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION -
SAS strongly encourages graduate and undergraduate students to present their work at the Society’s annual meetings, including participation in the annual Student Paper Competition. Each graduate and undergraduate winner is awarded a certificate, $200, and inclusion of the winning work in a SAS publication. COMPETITION GUIDELINES: Currently enrolled students must submit an abstract and three copies of a paper of no more than 20 pages (following American Anthropologist style) on or before January 23, 2005. Each entrant must also join SAS, register for the conference, pay related fees, and present the paper in session at the 2005 meeting.
