SOUTHERN ANTROPOLOGICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING, 40TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION, MARCH 10-MARCH 13, 2005, CHATTANOOGA, TN Register for the 40th Annual SAS Meeting in Chattanooga, March 10 - 13, 2005 2005 Final Schedule and Program Plans for the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society have firmed up over the summer. Members will receive a separate email with the General Call for Papers, announcements about the graduate and undergraduate Student Paper Competitions, calls to participate in new Video and Poster Sessions, and other details very soon. After that email notice, the same calls and announcements, plus conference registration, hotel and travel, and annual dues information, as well as periodic updates will appear on the SAS website.
This 40th SAS Anniversary Annual Meeting is set for March 10-March 13, 2005 at the historic Read Hotel in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee, just renovated and reopened as a flagship Sheraton hotel. They’ve offered us great rates, and the historic portions of the hotel are truly grand. The hotel’s location on the free downtown trolley route provides easy access to the city’s nearby historic, arts, museum, riverfront, and entertainment districts, and many dining venues, day and evening.
This year’s meeting location was chosen with several things in mind. There are many interesting things to see and do in Chattanooga, an easily accessible, centrally located, major city of the South. More importantly, the city’s revitalized downtown presents SAS annual meeting program development with a unique opportunity to combine scholarly interests of our Society and members with one metropolitan area’s organizing efforts and results toward transitioning from an early mass tourism destination to a broad-based, sustainable tourism focus, paired with community redevelopment needs.
Our Keynote theme this year is SUSTAINING AND REIMAGINING COMMUNITY IN A GLOBALIZING WORLD. Our Keynote Speaker is June Nash, a true pioneer in the field of globalization studies. Dr. Nash continues to conduct field research and write extensively on this topic, and will travel from her long-term field location in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico to be with us for the entire conference. Our other Keynote Panelists are also actively involved in the study of one or more of the following related topics: Indigenous Enclaves, Diasporas, and Transnational Communities; Rituals of Communion and Alienation in Defining and Maintaining Community; Violence, Insurrection and the Construction or Destruction of Community; Cultural and Heritage Tourism: (Re)Shaping Community Identity; Institutional-Community Partnerships; Grassroots Movements and Community Sustainability
Optional, organized educational/arts/music/sustainable development tours and events are being planned, primarily for Thursday afternoon/evening, Friday evening, and Sunday morning. Saturday evening’s special 40th SAS Anniversary Reception and Awards Ceremony, to be held in the Read House’s historic Silver Ballroom (modeled on the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles), will give members, students, and guests an extended opportunity to visit with Dr. Nash, our Keynote speaker, other Keynote panelists, old friends, and colleagues, as well as enjoy traditional regional entertainment and a multiple authors’ book signing event.
