St. Mary's Selects Search Firm

Dear Campus Community,

On behalf of the Presidential Search Committee Selection Subgroup, I am pleased to announce that we have selected Witt/Kieffer as our search firm. Nine firms responded to our RFP and we interviewed four. Dr. Katherine Haley of Witt/Kieffer was our unanimous choice. Prior to joining Witt/Kieffer as a search consultant, Kate served as the first woman president of Gettysburg College. She has also held the position of president at Whittier College in California, as well as provost and professor of English at Kenyon College in Ohio.

I want to thank Larry Leak, Sven Holmes, Alan Dillingham, Sara Slaff, Pat Hunt and Kathy Grimes for their diligent work on this first step in our search. As noted in an earlier message, our Presidential Search Committee and Search Planning Group will be comprised of trustees (including several alums), faculty, staff and students to represent the campus community as we move through the search process.

During the interviews with the search firms we asked each to discuss with us the pros and cons of a closed search. After hearing their thoughts this sub group discussed this issue further and concluded that we would recommend to the search committee that the search be open. What we mean by this is that after confidential airport interviews, the search committee would select a small number of finalists whom we would bring to campus for meetings with the Board, faculty, staff and students.

The Search Committee will begin our work by holding an open forum for the campus community on Friday, October 4 at 3:00 pm in St. Mary's Hall. We will update you on the proposed timeline and process for the presidential search. We also look forward to hearing from you regarding the qualifications and attributes you seek in the next president of St. Mary's College.

Gail Harmon, Chair
Presidential Search Committee
