The academic advising program at St. Mary's College of Maryland is committed to being a student-centered, integral part of the entire educational experience for students at our institution, the public honors college within the state of Maryland's higher educational system, as we honor our commitment to provide a diverse group of students with an excellent education.
The academic advising program at St. Mary's College of Maryland provides the mechanism through which students identify those abilities, needs, interests and values essential to their optimal academic performance. The academic advising program is grounded in an understanding of the developmental needs of the student throughout the college experience, the importance of collaboration and active engagement on the part of all individuals involved in the student's education, and the value of the breadth and depth of a liberal arts education. Thus, advising is perceived as an on-going and multi-faceted process that is focused on the development of decision-making skills. While the advisor serves as a facilitator for communication and planning related to academic progress, it is the student who bears ultimate responsibility for monitoring progress towards graduation and for ensuring completion of the entire educational program resulting in conferral of the degree.
