Who is my advisor?
Students are assigned an advisor several weeks before the beginning of their first semester on campus. You can find out the name of your advisor by logging in to your SMCM Portal account and then selecting academic record. It is also listed in your orientation folder when you arrive on campus.
When to meet with your advisor?
You will meet with your advisor during orientation or in the first week of classes. There is no need to bring anything to this meeting. After your initial meeting, you are required to meet with your advisor at least once per semester, for pre-registration advising. However, for best results we encourage frequent contact. Some students see their advisors multiple times, either to ask questions, or just to keep in touch.
Any student is also welcome to meet with a member of the Academic Services staff. Please call to make an appointment, or drop by our office.

To initiate a change of advisor, the new advisor must e-mail the request to firstname.lastname@example.org, providing the student’s full name and ID number.
Students who would like a new advisor, but do not have a specific professor in mind, should contact Academic Services to be matched with a suitable professor.

Preparation for admission to the MAT program, and for eventual teaching certification, can be complex. Students who are contemplating teaching as a career are encouraged to consult the Educational Studies department’s website, and to meet with a member of the Educational Studies faculty, in addition to their regular advisor, to ensure that they are on track to satisfy college and state requirements.
Please contact the Department of Educational Studies for information about teacher preparation and the MAT program.
