Welcome to the website for the Office of Academic Services! Those of us in the office are happy to work with you in any way. We are:
Programs with which we are involved include advising, New Student Days, August Orientation, College 101, health science advising, advising for major national scholarships (Fulbrights, Rhodes, etc.), advising for incoming matriculating international students, and advising for students with accommodations under ADA. Additionally, we have representation on the Core Curriculum Committee, International Education Management Committee, and the Academic Policy Committee. The Office of Academic Services – Our Mission and Goals
MISSION STATEMENT
The Office of Academic Services provides support for all students and faculty at St. Mary’s as they collaborate to achieve their educational goals within the framework of the College’s commitment to academic excellence.
VISION STATEMENT
Through collaboration and interaction with other members of all campus sectors, both academic and non-academic, the Office of Academic Services seeks to affect positively the recruitment, retention, graduation, and post-graduation outcomes for all our constituents in service to the larger institutional goals of providing an excellent education to a diverse student body.
GOAL STATEMENTS
All students at St. Mary’s College of Maryland benefit from the services of this office, the goals of which include
- disseminating information about nationally-recognized scholarship programs to students and faculty and supporting highly-qualified students throughout the process of applying for such opportunities
- providing assistance to students with documented disabilities who are entitled to accommodations, both in and out of the classroom, as they seek to make the most of their St. Mary’s experience
- providing support for students who are having academic difficulties for any reason, working with other offices on campus to provide structures, both educational and social, they may need in order to be successful
- educating new faculty advisors and working with all faculty in their development as advisors
- supporting faculty in their professional development as teachers of students from diverse backgrounds with diverse needs
- supporting transfer, non-traditional, and continuing education students as well as Charlotte Hall Fellows as they take advantage of the College’s educational opportunities
- interacting with other offices on campus to help all students meet their educational and personal goals
- maintaining a strong academic advising program by investigating research on developmental advising at the college level, assessing all elements of the advising program, and making adjustments and changes to it as indicated by such evaluations
- supporting efforts campus-wide in the area of assessment and program evaluation
- tracking and analyzing data about student performance across curricular areas in order to determine student needs and possible programmatic changes that might better help all campus entities better meet those needs
- collaborating with the Office of International Education to meet the needs of students seeking to study abroad, students from other countries studying at SMCM, and faculty working to internationalize the SMCM experience, and to evaluate the effectiveness of study abroad experiences and other internationalization efforts in accomplishing the mission of the college
- responding to other requests for collaboration, programming, data-collection, and tasks as necessary and appropriate to accomplish the mission of the office
