Academic Policies

Academic Policies are those polices that govern the ways students and faculty navigate issues related to the academic life of the campus. Policies address topics ranging from how students work with advisors to regulations for internships to transfer of credits to grading. All such policies are available in the catalog; while the curriculum for any given major and the core requirements are determined by the catalog of the student's year of entry to SMCM for the most part, policies may be revised and those of the current catalog year are those that are in effect at any given time. Academic Policies is the appropriate index term to use when searching for the academic policy section of the catalog. Additionally, there are policies for specific programs, such as Continuing Education or Student Designed Majors located in other areas of the catalog as well.

The Academic Policy Committee is the faculty/student group charged with monitoring academic policies, revising and updating and adding to them as needs change or arise. The Assistant Registrar sits on the committee in an ex-officio capacity, as does the Associate Provost for Academic Services. This committee is the group to which petitions for exceptions to policies should be directed. It meets approximately every other week during the regular fall and spring semesters, and meets at the end of each term to hear dismissal appeals. To file a petition, complete the form and letter as outlined in this Protocol for a Letter of Appeal to the Academic Policy Committee. Print out the form and give it to the Assistant Registrar, Susan Morse, or email it all to her at slmorse@smcm.edu.
