Oxford, a favorite destination for fulfilling requirements in history, literature, and political science.
"The best part of studying history is that it gives me a chance to interpret the past for myself based upon the evidence, rather than taking somebody's word for it. It is basically just the story of our past, and who doesn't like stories?"
-- Michael Tanner '03
Each generation reinterprets history in terms of its own experience and particular interest. History is a living body of knowledge, the collected and organized record of humanity. The study of history provides a means for interpreting the present as well as the past by instilling an appreciation for how cultures develop--the relationship between change and continuity.
St. Mary's offers history majors several opportunities to pursue studies outside the regular course curriculum. The College is affiliated with Historic St. Mary's Citythe custodian and interpreter of colonial St. Mary's City (1634)-and materials of an archaeological and historical nature associated with it are readily available for students to study.
History majors often pursue a second major in fields like English, an international language, political science, psychology, or biology; or they may also minor in any of the 15 choices the college offers.
Make history come alive by creating your own St. Mary's Project. Examples include:
Historians travel the world to better understand its cultures and so to interpret history.
"Studying at Lingnan University was a lot of fun. Hong Kong is very close, and the people are all very friendly. You learn a lot about Chinese culture, and there are plenty of places close by, like Macau, mainland China, or Thailand, that are very easy
to get to."
-- Noah Brandon, 02
Half of all St. Mary's students continue on to graduate or professional school. Many recent history majors have chosen to do graduate study at:

History internships may also be carried out locally, either through the College's Center for the Study of Democracy or through its neighbor and affiliate, Historic St. Mary's City. Here, students may undertake the archaeological task of digging up the colonial settlement, working in the archaeology lab, interpreting colonial history as a tour guide, or working as part of the ship's crew on the re-created "Maryland Dove." The College also maintains professional relations with the Maryland Historical Trust, the Archaeological Society of Maryland, Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, and Sotterley Plantation.
