Political Science and Public Policy

Julie Hocker '05 in a White House internship

Students of political science learn that the political world extendsfrom human relations and small groups all the way to the internationalstage. Students learn not just the facts of political science, but thetheoretical issues involved in shaping political life. Students cantake courses in four principal areas: American politics, comparativepolitics, international policies, and political theory.

Theinterdisciplinary public policy major integrates knowledge fromeconomics, sociology, anthropology, and political science forapplication to policy problems. The major equips students with theanalytical skills and social science theory required for graduatestudy.

Students can double-major in political science and public policy. Students who major in one often take a second major in economics, or history; while others pursue minors in a science, language, or cross-disciplinary study area.

St. Mary's Project (SMP)

St. Mary's Projects are a great way to combine interests betweenpolitical science and another discipline. Some examples include:

  • True peace? A comparison of post-conflict Northern Ireland and South Africa
  • The politics of the Native American mascot controversy
  • The image of Africa in the media
  • Judicial selection methods in the U.S. and Germany: Ideals or culture?
  • The Origins of Zionism
  • Indigent criminal defense: The last piece of the puzzle
  • Después de Fidel: The potential for democratization in Cuba

Travel Abroad

How better to study international politics than to spend time inanother country, learning about its history and political customs andissues.

"My study abroad experience [at Sciences Po, Paris] became one of thehigh points in my career at St. Mary's and in my life in general. Itwas the learning experience of a life-time as it gave me theopportunity to live and work in France which helped deepen my knowledgeof the French language and culture. I not only met people fromdifferent backgrounds and cultures but it was my study abroadexperience that finally determined my career choice."
