The beginning of the end…

Written by Kathy Orellana

So after figuring out where all our posters and pictures get hung up (we would hate to have non-symmetrical décor) and which cabinet will hold the mugs (as opposed to regular drinking cups) and which direction our desks will face (so as to not hit the sun directly), Tuesday came and it was time to worry about real things. For one, since I am more terrified of all sciences than I am of getting killed crossing the street (I’m not a very good street-crosser), I am that slacker senior in an intro level biology class. I guess it didn’t help very much that on the first day, I already knew I was the dumbest one in the room. Go me, right? Even still, overcoming my fear of the bio talk seemed almost entirely overshadowed by the very fact that this was SENIOR YEAR. Not only are half of us running around complaining about our SMP and even blaming bad weather on it, but we’re slowing realizing that this is it. Questions to the likes of, “What are you doing with the rest of your life?” and “So where’s your degree going to take you?” are not scarce. It’d be nice if I actually had answers because as of right now, I only have a blank stare to meet these grilling queries. In fact just this week when my parents hinted at me getting my post-graduation life together, I shrugged it off replying that this week, I had bigger things to worry about; namely, my turning 21.

But before any of the celebrations could begin, I had to assume my responsibilities to our senior class as an officer. A large part of my summer, spent down here by the river, was dedicated to making sure that this year’s activities were mapped out to perfection and that nothing was left forgotten. Between planning a crab feast (how Maryland, right?), kicking off our senior year’s theme, a smaller version of Post Secret project started by Frank Warren (http://postsecret.blogspot.com/), and other large events, I knew my days would be booked solid. In addition to these responsibilities, I serve on the exec board for Raices Hispanas, the Hispanic culture club, work as a server at a local reception hall, and work for the Admissions office on campus. But this is a good thing because as far as I’m concerned, these are still “fun” responsibilities. A few months from now, I’m not sure my life will be as “fun.”
