This past week, I was able to experience one of my favorite rituals of the semester… dance club auditions. Actually, it’s really an incredibly awkward experience for me. Dance club is really awesome because (like every other club) ANYONE can try out, even if they haven’t danced in the past. So, when we have auditions, we do everything from walking across the floor, to turns, to short routine pieces. Based on how we break it down, our student choreographers pick people to be in their dances. It’s really fun, and everyone who tries out gets to be in at least one dance.
Although I like to think that I have some abilities (I’m trained in ballet, and I did poms in high school), I am not known for my incredible improv skills or walking skills. Therefore, I end up looking like a fool for the entire audition process. When they go “yeah, break it down!” then I might as well leave. Fortunately, some people actually know what I am capable of doing, so I end up being in jazz and lyrical dances. I just found out that I’m going to be in four dances this semester. As a senior, I am super excited to be in this one dance to the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Suck my Kiss” because my friend has wanted to choreograph to the song for a while… and because I love that song. I haven’t had practices for the other dances yet (we meet once a week) but I’m sure they will be pretty fabulous as well!
Since I’m getting out of here soon, I get to do a Senior Spotlight in our dance show in April. (All of the seniors that are involved in dance club are given the opportunity to do a brief solo/group piece.) I’m going to be doing my spotlight with a few of my friends. We have some brilliant ideas for it in the works… stay tuned.
Well, not to sound like a total loser, but time to hit the books. I have a meeting at five, and I really want to make an appearance at the basketball game at eight. So… time to get some work done.
