OK, so Harry Potter Weekend is not actually an official event, but my suitemates and I decided to observe it when we discovered that this weekend’s movie was “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” See, the Office of Student Activities sponsors a movie each weekend that plays once on Friday night, twice on Saturday evening/night, and once on Sunday afternoon in Cole Cinema on campus (and it’s free to students!). The movies are generally pretty new and haven’t been released to DVD yet– movies shown earlier in the year include “The Proposal” and “The Hangover.”
So, anyway, this weekend’s movie was Harry Potter. Now, I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in saying that I’m pretty much obsessed with Harry Potter, although you might not have read each book at least ten times (no exaggeration here, people). In order to properly observe Harry Potter Weekend, my suitemates and I finally put up our three huge Harry Potter posters in the common room of our suite, and added a string of neon blue lights to complete the redecoration.
We then had a mini-marathon of a few of the older Harry Potter movies and lots of extra features, and got to Cole Cinema an hour early to save our seats for the Friday evening showing (this may sound excessive, but “Dark Knight” filled up about 45 minutes in advance when it played last year!). We continued the marathon after the showing of the sixth movie, and a lot of out friends ended up joining us on our ample couch space for the third movie (my favorite, I think). It was a pretty laid-back evening, but we all had fun, and saved our energy for a Saturday of lots of homework and Halloween festivities. =)
