One week. One week until final exams are over. One week until I will no longer be a college freshman. One week until I pack up my things and head back home for summer vacation. I can’t even begin to tell you how unbelievable this feels. I can clearly remember that hot august day when my parents and I spent two hours setting up my dorm room. I can remember those grueling weeks of tryouts, my first day of classes, and even my first time I went kayaking on the St. Mary’s River. Time has flown since I first arrived here, and now I’m beginning to realize how quickly the college experience will really be.
When I think about everything I’ve experienced here at St. Mary’s, I sometimes can’t fathom how I survived it all. I felt like a child thrown in the deep end on her first day of swimming lessons. I would either sink or swim, and now looking back, I know that I swam. It certainly was a wild ride, one that I wasn’t exactly ready to get on at first, but I’m so glad I did. College gave me the opportunity to find my true potential. I’ve accomplished things here that I never thought I could do, and I can’t wait to find what’s in store for me in the years to come.
As for summer, things are pretty much up in the air. Work will be a given as always and I’ll have to continue training for preseason in the fall. In regards to vacations, I’ve decided to be spontaneous; maybe a road trip or two, some camping, some beach, and even some amusement parks. But, whatever I decide to do, I want to be able to enjoy my time off. For the most part I’m looking forward to spending time with my family and friends, since I don’t get to see them throughout the school year. When you have to leave the ones you love, you learn to appreciate every moment you spend with them, which is why I know that this summer will be unforgettable.
The time has almost come. I’m finishing up my last bits and pieces of homework, and final exams are only days away. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy college life, but I am so happy that the year is coming to a close. Look out home! Here I come!
