Summer. It’s the season everyone looks forward to, yet it’s gone in a flash. I can’t believe that it’s August already! Back to school commercials are already making their way into our television sets, and the piles of tubs that were never completely unpacked when they arrived become a daily reminder of the packing ordeal every college student must endure. As a sophomore I know now that less is certainly more. With only a Honda to carry all of my things to school this year, I’m forcing myself to be picky; only packing the necessities.
On the job front I have finally found employment! After about a month of applying and searching, I was hired at a nearby kennel. Although this type of work was far from my accustomed duties as a grocery store cashier, I was simply happy to be working. Summer has its way of draining bank accounts pretty fast. Despite the fact that my job requires mostly manual labor, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the kennel. For one, I get plenty of hours (which means hefty paychecks!), I am no longer a victim of customer service, and I’m lucky enough to be able to be outside for most of the day. Unfortunately, the weather this summer has been unrelenting. We’ve had days that reached into the hundreds, with heat indexes of five to ten degrees hotter. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I never remember Maryland being this unbearably hot before.
Despite the heat, this summer has been everything I had hoped. And, as most kids feel towards the end of their break, I am not ready for it to end. The thought of homework and tests and sitting in class for hours on end doesn’t exactly appeal to me. I am however pretty excited about being a sophomore. I know the ins and outs of college life, so there won’t be the anxiety of trying to fit in. Plus my classes in the fall are more specific towards my major, which means no more throw-away classes that simply fill the college requirement. A student actually taking classes he/she wants?! What a concept!
It’s crazy that I’ll be in college in less than three weeks. I’m heading off early for another exciting week of soccer tryouts. I’m hoping the weather is kind, but in the county of St. Mary’s there’s a slim chance of that happening. Here’s to enjoying August, the last shred of summer we have! Happy vacationing!
