Today my political science class visited the seat of St. Mary’s County government in Leonardtown, MD, just a couple miles down the road from the college. The class, called State and Local Politics, focuses specifically on Maryland Politics. A key component of the class is to experience different forms of local government in action. So today, we visited several departments of government at the county level, which included the department of economic development, the department of parks and recreation, and the department of land use. Though they operate on a much smaller level than departments at the federal or state level, these departments are fundamentally important to the day-to-day operations of the county. Later on in the semester, our class will make several trips to Annapolis to observe the state government in action. I think this class highlights the great opportunities a St. Mary’s education has to offer. Not only are we learning about various subjects in the classroom, we are going out into the community to experience them.
