Q    What were you looking for in a college?
A.    In the beginning of my college search process, I wanted to be at a larger school. Other than that one requirement, I did not know what I really wanted.  I was really drawn to The University of Maryland, Towson, and Salisbury.  After I visited SMCM, I started to visualize the real difference of attending a smaller school.  Fortunately, I realized I wouldn't be just a number at SMCM.

Q.    What made you choose St. Mary's over other schools that accepted you?
A.    I applied to St. Mary's during the early decision process.  When I visited mid-August before my senior year, I complained the whole ride down that SMCM was not for me. After an information session with Loretta Cook, Assistant Director of Admissions, I took a tour.  It was a gorgeous day and we got to the arbor area of Garden Of Remembrance.  I said to myself "how many kids can be at a school with a view like this?"  Right then, I realized St. Mary's was the place I wanted to not only further my education, but to also call home for the next four years.

Q.   What have you learned about yourself since starting college?
A    I'm not good at laundry.  During the first couple weeks of school, I called my mom a lot for help.  I'm getting better at it though.  I've also learned to appreciate the values my parents instilled in me.  Since being in college, I not only practice those values but also understand them.  My family has really had a positive influence on me.

Q.    Any advice for incoming students?
A.    Pick a school that you know will fit your personality.  You have to be able to imagine yourself on that campus and see yourself being an active part of the institution's mission.  If you cannot picture yourself being there for four years, then that school probably is not for you.

Q.    Are there any people that impacted your selection?
A.    A friend of mine, Susan, attends St. Mary's and spoke highly of it.  She initially brought the school to my attention.  My dad really encouraged me to look at other schools besides University of Maryland- College Park.  I'm glad he supported me in keeping my options open.

Q.    What is one thing you have learned about SMCM since you've been here?
A.    This school is really academically challenging.  The work is definitely harder than high school and I feel like I am getting more out of it.  I'm learning with a more global perspective instead of just memorizing definitions and recalling facts.  Whether I am inside or outside the classroom, I feel like I am constantly learning.  Also, St. Mary's really is a place of real opportunities.  I am currently involved with the Student Government Association, fencing, and water polo.   Other students have really supported me in these activities, especially in fencing and water polo since it was the first time I played these sports.

Q.    What was your motivation behind trying something new?
A.    I wanted to do something different.  Fencing and water polo were always interesting to me but the opportunity to play them at home didn't exist.  My initial interest started during the club fair which we have every year.  I talked to some current members and I decided to give it a shot.  When I first got started with both sports, my peers were more than willing to teach me the ins and outs.

Q.    What was the IT factor that convinced you to attend St. Mary's?
A.    I really liked the intimacy of the campus.  I feel like there are more accessible opportunities at a smaller school.  We might not have the quantity of opportunities as a bigger school but the quality of the opportunities are much better.  When you go to a smaller school, it's easier to be more involved with different aspects of college.

Q.    Can you describe the classroom environment?
A.    The classrooms here truly are positive environments for thoughtful learning. I got to know my professors on a first-name basis and met classmates who are now my friends.  I really enjoy being able to sit down and talk to my professors about college and life, not only in the classroom but outside of the classroom as well.
