Carol Giesen and Laraine Glidden
Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established in 2012 in honor of Carol A. B. Giesen, Professor Emerita of Human Development, by Laraine M. Glidden, Distinguished Professor Emerita of Psychology and Human Development, to benefit non-traditional students who have academic merit and financial need.

Carol A. B. Giesen began teaching at St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 1980 after completing her B.A. and Ph.D. as a nontraditional, middle-aged student, whose earlier careers included military service, bookkeeping and office management, wife, and mother of five children. She was a dedicated teacher, an author in the field of social gerontology, and a committed and effective leader recognized for her outstanding service as the 1998 recipient of the Homer L. Dodge Award for Outstanding Service. Dr. Giesen retired in 2001.

Laraine M. Glidden began teaching at St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 1976. She held numerous administrative positions at the College such as director of the honors program and associate provost. Her research accomplishments were recognized by multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health to study families rearing children with disabilities as well as national and state awards, and by her selection as the first recipient of the Norton T. Dodge Award for Scholarly and Creative Achievement. Dr. Glidden retired in 2012 after 36 years of service to the College.
