What is an arboretum?
An arboretum is a place where trees, plants, and shrubs are identified and maintained for their educational and aesthetic value.
What are the goals of the arboretum?
We will label trees and plantings on campus; continue to identify, create and protect habitats for native animals and plants; and commit to planting primarily native species to support birds and beneficial insect populations.
Is the arboretum exclusive to the college community?
No, St. Mary's College of Maryland will be working with Historic St. Mary's City and St. Mary's Parish on this initiative. St. Mary's College of Maryland is a public institution and its arboretum associates will invite the public in for informational workshops and training sessions.
