Raingardens, Bioretention, and Conservation Areas at St. Mary’s College

At St. Mary's College of Maryland, we are working hard to plant, whenever possible and logical, native species that will invite beneficial wildlife, as well as address water quality and stormwater issues.

One particular action is to install raingardens, bioretention, and conservation areas that provide soil-holding and water filtration services.  We have several examples of these gardens on campus, installed via Professor Jackie Takacs' environmental science classes.  Professor Takacs comes to us as the college's educator representing the Maryland Sea Grant Extension Program.

Bioretention areas are engineered locations with built-in drainage and, in our case, often recycling/irrigation abilities built in.  The pond behind Admissions is the most complicated example of this on our campus, collecting stormwater runoff from the two science buildings Schaeffer and Goodpaster (water in it is used to irrigate the adjacent playing field much beloved by our athletic, but not varsity team playing, students).  The raingardens we have on campus are mostly actually bioretention areas, with built-in overflow drainage capabilities.  But the purpose of these areas is the same as the simpler versions most likely to be installed on the home landscape: the raingarden.  In raingardens, a scientific formula is used to create and address stormwater runoff needs via recessed, below grade planting areas.  Native plants are used for these spaces, due to their typically deeper root systems and ability to withstand both dry and occasional wet conditions.  Most homeowners throughout southern Maryland would benefit from installing raingardens, to deal with their own stormwater needs and our state-wide need to be respectful of our always near waterways and watershed.

You will find bioretention areas/raingardens adjacent to Glendenning Hall, the campus student center, and Waring Commons.  You will find conservation areas behind the ARC in the parking lot off of Mattapany, and at our Healing Garden.  More of these native plant, environmentally friendly areas are planned for the coming years, as well.

Below you will find planting reference material for these gardens.  Artwork on the signage installed at the Glendenning, student center and Healing Garden sites is all drawn from USDA reference materials.  In accordance with their wishes and our desire to duly acknowledge originators of the work we have utilized on our campus signage (but space on the signage limits the citation we can provide), we credit below the appropriate team and/or artist responsible for the artwork representing the plants.

Thank you to the USDA for this imagery, which helps us identify plants, and educate visitors to the St. Mary's Arboretum!
