ARCHIVES
The St. Mary's College of Maryland Archives is located in Calvert Hall 009.
We provide for the acquisition, organization, description, preservation, and availability of unique materials documenting the history of the school as well as the history of Southern Maryland, particularly St. Mary's County.
Due to their one-of-a-kind nature, archival materials don't circulate and must be used in the Archives.
We're open Monday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Walk-in visitors are welcome, but appointments are encouraged!

Historic campus photographs Most of the photographs in this collection originate from St. Mary's Female Seminary (1840-1926), St. Mary's Female Seminary Junior College (1926-1949), St. Mary's Seminary Junior College (1949-1964), and St. Mary's College of Maryland (1964- ). These photographs document St. Mary's people (students, faculty, staff), places (buildings, grounds) and events (commencement, Governor's Cup, etc.). The physical collection includes tens of thousands of photographs, including negatives, slides, and prints. Most of our photographs dating from the late nineteenth century through the 1970s have been scanned and are available through this online collection. The full physical collection of photographs is available at the Archives in Calvert Hall.
SlackWater archive (transcripts are available from on-campus computers only) This collection consists of oral history interviews relating to the history, culture and folklore of Southern Maryland, primarily St. Mary's County in the 20th century. Interviews are physically documented on audiocassettes, CDs, transcripts, and recording logs. The online collection contains full-text transcripts or recording logs only; access to these is restricted to on-campus users. Full access to audio recordings and transcripts is available at the Archives in Calvert Hall.
St. Mary's Project abstracts (available from on-campus computers only) The St. Mary's Project is the capstone of study at St. Mary's College of Maryland. It may be a research project or a creative expression in the arts, and is supervised by a faculty mentor. After official submission to the Registrar, St. Mary's Projects are housed at the College Archives. This online collection contains abstracts only and not the actual SMPs. Full access to actual SMPs is available at the Archives in Calvert Hall; some restrictions may apply.
