Matthew Fishel (studio art, 2001) completed an MFA at Maryland Institute College of Art in 2010. Originally interested in painting, Matthew has expanded his practice to include animation, video, installation, and digital imaging. He is a frequent contributor to RedStarKGB, an ongoing collaboration of filmmakers in Baltimore. His own film, "A Short Film Regarding Possibilities", was selected by the Maryland Film Festival in 2006. See his work at http://www.matthewfishel.com
ARTH 321: Ancient Maya Art and Architecture back to courses index

An introduction to the art and history of the ancient Maya of Mesoamerica. The course will address the principal sites and monuments of "Classic" Maya civilization, impart a working knowledge of the hieroglyphic writing system, and survey the political history of the region and independent cities. In particular, the course concentrates on the role of the visual arts in the construction, maintenance and public presentation of elements of royal identity and cosmic order that reinforced the tenuous political power of Maya rulers.
Prerequisite is one of the following: ARTH 100, 220, 250, ART 105, or consent of instructor.
