ARTH 410: After Modern Art: 1945 to the Present back to courses index
This course explores art from abstract expressionism to the present, with particular focus on issues such as the modernist artist-hero; the emergence of alternative or non-traditional media; the influence of the women's movement and the gay/lesbian liberation movement on contemporary art; globalization; and postmodern theory and practice. The course is organized as a series of thematically-based explorations of dominant ideas and concerns of contemporary artists of the past half-century. Slide presentations, lecture, and discussion.
