with Dr. Kenneth Crews
A Mini-Symposium on Images, Copyright, and Fair Use for Students, Faculty, and Staff with Dr. Kenneth Crews, Director of the Copyright Advisory Office at Columbia University.
Morning Session 9:30-11:00am: learn about the basics of copyright, get tips for owning your work and taking advantage of fair use for your own class work and scholarship.  Bring questions!!  [followed by light lunch and conversation]
Afternoon Session 12:30pm-2:00pm: What do you want to know? Open Q&A with Dr. Crews.  Bring examples of work, and more questions.

Visiting Artist Lecture: Camilo Sanin
Painter Camilo Sanin was born in Bogota, Colombia and now resides in Washington DC. Sanin's paintings are subtle geometric
abstractions that use line, color, and form to challenge preconceived visual ideals. The work explores cultural materials and personal experiences from differing local realities in order to derive and distill at a new narrative. The interest lies in achieving visual equivalences through contrasting opposites, in the relationship of center to periphery, and in our delineation of inclusion through explicit terms of exclusion.

Visiting Artist Lecture: Glenn Shrum
Spanning the fields of design and art practice, Glenn Shrum’s work with light places him at the center of converging professional disciplines.  Originally trained as an architect, Shrum received a Masters of Fine Arts in Studio Art with an emphasis on lighting installations and light art history from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2008.  In addition to his professional activity as principal of Flux Studio, Glenn Shrum is an active member of the international lighting design and education community.

Artist Talk: Matt Fishel: Graduate School for the Visual Arts: Which, How and Why?
Matthew Fishel attended St. Mary's College of Maryland, graduating in 2001 with a BA in Art, and earned his MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2010. He now lives and works in Baltimore, MD in the Remington neighborhood. Since earning his MFA, he has taught drawing at St. Mary's College of Maryland and led graduate workshops at MICA on the use of digital tools for artists. Matthew has exhibited nationally, recently in Seattle and Massachusetts. His first solo show was in 2011, at the Fine Arts Work Center.

The SMCM SEA Spring Forum: Arts Across the Curriculum
This year’s forum will include:
• The Art of Teaching Through the Arts: Closing the “Arts Gap” in Public Schools—A SMP Presentation by Laura Koler
• Breakout sessions led by St. Mary’s professors and SMCM MAT Alumni teachers in the community who will demonstrate how to use the arts to enrich all parts of the curriculum
• A panel discussion and Q & A session on the broader role of the arts in public schools, in our communities, and in our personal lives

Lecture: Natalia González Requena, On her Work
Natalia González Requena is a Bolivian artist currently moving between the cities of Santa Cruz in Bolivia and Pittsburgh in the United States. In her art, González Requena applies temporal and spatial considerations to an expanded notion of drawing. Through interactions with objects, cameras, and/or light, she employs diverse methods of drawing. These include installations, video performances, and drawings on paper. Intersecting with her exhibition practice, Natalia remains active as an art teacher. She began instructing painting classes at the NUR University in Bolivia (1993-1994) and currently holds the position of adjunct drawing instructor at UPSA University (2012) in Santa Cruz.

Visiting Artist Talk: Kate McCammon on her Recent Experiences at Artist Residencies (Italy, Norway, France)
Kate McCammon is a recent BFA graduate from Maryland Institute College of Art (2012). Her enigmatic paintings draw on the history of portraiture as well as the genre of landscape. She was awarded a number of residencies while an undergraduate student including one to study portraiture with Norwegian artist, Odd Nerdrum, and since graduation she has been awarded multiple residencies in Italy and Ireland. Kate will talk about the work she did while in residence, discuss the art work that inspired her during her residencies, and show slides of program locations and facilities and talk about the different programs in which she’s participated.

Artist Talk: Bonnie Rychlak: Artist as Curator
Bonnie Rychlak is an independent curator, art consultant, lecturer and visual artist. She is the former curator for the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum and the Isamu Noguchi Foundation, Inc. An artist herself, she worked as an assistant to Isamu Noguchi beginning in January 1980 until his death in 1988. Rychlak is considered an authority on Isamu Noguchi and worked for many years on his catalogue raisonné. Specialties: the work of Isamu Noguchi, 20th century sculpture, contemporary sculpture.
