Jacob Lewis (art history, 2002) is currently living in Paris while conducting dissertation research for his PhD (art history) from Northwestern University.  Jacob was awarded a nationally-competitive Samuel H. Kress Foundation Travel Fellowship to support his research.

Bio

Sue Johnson is a Professor of Art and has been teaching at St. Mary's College since 1993. She teaches courses in painting, drawing, printmaking, combined media, book arts, and scientific illustration. Professor Johnson received a B.F.A. from Syracuse University and an M.F.A. in painting from Columbia University. She studied art in London and Florence with Syracuse University. Before coming to St. Mary's, she was the workshop coordinator for Triangle Artists' Workshop, and taught at the Herron School of Art I.U.P.U.I, and the Parsons School of Design. Her on-going mixed media project, The Alternate Encyclopedia has been shown extensively since 1995 at museums, universities, galleries and alternative spaces. Professor Johnson has received several national grants and awards, including an NEA Mid-Atlantic grant in painting, Pollock-Krasner Foundation fellowship and three Maryland State Council on the Arts individual artist awards.

Exhibition Information

Johnson is currently serving as an artist-in-residence at the Rosenbach Library and Museum, Philadelphia, PA. where an exhibition opens in Fall 2009.

Recent one-person exhibitions at the University of Richmond Museums, 2008; Schroeder-Romero/Winkleman Project Space, 2008; Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2007; Swarthmore College, 2007; The John Michael Kohler Art Center, 2006; Carleton College, 2005; and the Tweed Museum of Art, 2004. Recent group exhibitions include shows at Kunst und Gewerbeverein Gallery, Regensberg, Germany; Lewis & Clark College, Lehman College, and 1708 Gallery.

Awarded a resident library research fellowships by the American Philosophical Society, 2004; and the American Antiquarian Society, 2000.

Awarded residency fellowships to the Kohler Arts/Industry program, 2007; Jentel Foundation, 2006, Salzburg Kunstlerhaus, 2006; Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, 1990, 1995, 2003 and 2005; Art Omi International Artist Colony, 2001; Ragdale Foundation, 1999; the MacDowell Colony, 1989, 1991, and 1999; Vermont Studio Center; Artist-in-residence at the Oberfalzer Kunstlerhaus in Schwandorf, 1999.

Recent Faculty Accomplishments

Sue Johnson was awarded residency fellowships by the Jentel Foundation (2006), Salzburg Kunstlerhaus/VCCA (2006), and the Kohler Arts/Industry program (2007). Johnson received Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council 2008 (Works on Paper), 2005 (Sculpture/Installation) and 1996 (Painting). She serves on the board of directors of the National Council of Arts Administrators, and also serves on the Exhibition Board of the Museum of the American Philosophical Society.
