17 January – 4 March 2011 Facing Fences - Southern Maryland
A traveling Smithsonian Institution exhibition, Facing Fences - Southern Maryland, will open in the Boyden Gallery at St. Mary’s College on 18 January 2011 to serve as a catalyst for a regional exploration of rights of way. In conjunction with the Smithsonian show will be complementary community-created displays on the subject of fences and access in southern Maryland. Are we defined by our fences? Who sets these boundaries and how do they grow or devolve? We will consider how fences protect or nourish us, and conversely how they thwart our efforts. In answer to questions like these, community groups are invited to represent their experience of fences via running displays in the gallery that show in tandem with the Smithsonian’s exhibition. Each group will be offered a wall space spanning four feet by nine feet high. Generous support will be furnished in the design, development and installation of a group’s wall panel. While the exhibition is on display multiple events will include listening circles, panel sessions, speakers, film series, demonstrations, and high school classes.
