A St. Mary’s Projects in Studio Art is a yearlong senior project wherestudents pursue sustained, self-directed art making accompaniedby written formulation of artistic concerns and research into relatedart and ideas. This exhibition presents an in-progress view of theircreative work at this halfway point.
Successions: Prints by African American Artists from the Jean and Robert Steele Collection

“Successions: Prints by African American Artists from the Jean and Robert Steele Collection” was originally organized by the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora and The Art Gallery at the University of Maryland. It was first presented at the university, and since has traveled around the country. Print techniques include etching, monoprint, lithography, linocut and silkscreen. The exhibition is made possible by support from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Consortium for Race, Gender, and Ethnicity, University of Maryland, College Park. |

42nd Annual Student Art Show

Contained a wide array of 3-D, 2-D, and digital artwork created by students. Awards for Outstanding Achievement went to Caitlin Sullivan(First-Year), Garret Zofi(Sophomore), Alexa Milroy(Junior), Allie Snyder(Senior), and Carol Morris(Post-grad). Ally Moore received the Patti Runco Arts Alliance Award for Outstand Work. The McCutheon Family Art Award was given to Allie Snyder, Vasari Prize, and Brittany Sigley. Tyne Lowe earned the Stephen Szabo Award. Outstanding Work in Art History or Art Theory was awarded to Mary Walters. |
Facing Fences - Southern Maryland ~ A Collaboration in Community Dialogue

A traveling Smithsonian Institution exhibition, Between Fences, was the catalyst for a regional exploration of rights of way. In conjunction with the Smithsonian show there were complementary community-wide initiatives on the theme of fences entitled, Facing Fences – Southern Maryland. Community groups exhibited displays in the Boyden Gallery and offered listening circles, panel sessions, speakers, film series, demonstrations, and high school classes across the Southern Maryland region to complement the Smithsonian exhibition. Visit this link to get a glimpse of what was offered. Between Fences is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Maryland Humanities Council. In Facing Fences, the Boyden Gallery partnered with Historic St. Mary’s City, The SlackWater Center and The Center for the Study of Democracy at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the Community Mediation Centers of Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties, and numerous affiliated community organizations. |

Tenterhooks

Tenterhooks was a two-person exhibition featuring the work of Karley Klopfenstein and Anja Marais. Both artists work in "soft" mediums with work that is incredibly labor intensive. Each artist deals with issues that arise when one society or culture dominates another, whether through war, occupation, or in the name of freedom, religion or civilization. Via carpeted sculptures, Klopfenstein's work addresses our current political situation in Iraq and the inherent contradictions of war, while Marais' paper figures prompt the exploration of the social constructs of colonialism and identity. "Tenterhooks"refers to the use of hooks in the sizing of woolen fabric in the Middle Ages;by the eighteenth century, it became associated with a feeling of unease or anxiety. These two artists view their works as both softly tender and deadly serious. |
