LOOKING FOR TARÔ KAJA: AN EVENING OF KYÔGEN COMEDIES
includes Catching Plovers, The Snail, The Healing Drink, and Learning the Alphabet
directed by Holly A. Blumner

Oct. 23-25, 30-31, and Nov. 1 at 8:00 p.m.
Oct. 26 and Nov. 2 at 2:00 p.m.
Bruce Davis Theater, Montgomery Hall
Ticket prices are $4 or $6.
For reservations, contact the Theater Box Office at 240-895-4243 or e-mail boxoffice@smcm.edu

Of special interest to our patrons: The performance on Sunday, Oct. 26 will benefit Prison Performing Arts, a St. Louis-based organization founded by artistic director Agnes Wilcox, who stages Shakespeare's plays with incarcerated men, women, and juveniles in Missouri's penal system. The ticket price for this special performance is $10.00. On Monday, Oct. 20, at 4:30 p.m. in Cole Cinema of the Campus Center, Wilcox will speak about her work with inmate-actors in a lecture, “Liberating Shakespeare in Prison.” Wilcox’s lecture is free and open to the public.

Tarô Kaja--trickster, mischief-maker, and funny-man--outwits and outsmarts his master and others in performances of Japanese kyôgen comedies in translation, including Catching Plovers (Chidori), The Snail (Kagyû), and The Healing Drink, a kyôgen-style piece written by Japanese performance studies student, Ian Prince, about two servants who try to trick their master and his older sister for drinks of sake.

A special feature of the evening is a short kyôgen, Iroha (Learning the Alphabet), performed in the original Japanese by students who studied traditional Japanese theater in Japan as ASIANetwork Freeman Student-Faculty Fellows during summer 2008.Pajak-Prince performing Student Fellows included Ian Prince, Judy Sellner, Rachel Reckling, Kathryn Miller, and Zach Pajak. Traditionally, Iroha is taught to child actors as the first play they learn as young students of kyôgen. It is about the 48 syllables of the Japanese alphabet. A general translation of the play, which features the humor of “kakekotoba” (or wordplay), will be provided for the audience.

"Kyôgen" literally means "mad words" or "wild, ecstatic speech" and is a traditional form of Japanese comic, or slapstick, performance. It developed alongside the more formal, solemn, and symbolic noh form; in fact, kyôgen comedies were played as an "intermission" or interlude between each act of the five-act noh play. Its primary goal is to make the audience laugh by highlighting the slapstick antics of performers, their stylized movements, and humorous wordplay.

The four kyôgen comedies in Looking for Tarô Kaja will be staged using a combination of western and classical kyôgen theater conventions, and will be performed on a traditional noh and kyôgen stage, recreated in the Bruce Davis Theater by scenic designer Leon Wiebers and technical director David Groupé. Actors will also perform in recreations of traditional kyôgen costumes, designed by Wiebers and constructed from traditional patterns by his student assistants.Kyogen stage

“Being able to see actors perform on a traditional noh and kyôgen stage in traditional kyôgen costuming,” director Blumner says, “is worth the price of admission alone. The visuals are stunning.”

Looking for Tarô Kaja promises to delight audiences of all ages and to acquaint them with a style of performance rarely seen on the boards in lower southern Maryland.

Grave Matters at St. Mary’s City: Food, Drink, and a Death Watch will take place at Historic St. Mary’s City on Friday and Saturday, October 24 and 25. Tours will depart from Farthing’s Ordinary at 7 and 8 p.m. each night. Experience an aspect of 17th-century colonial life often overlooked in living history: what happens after a person dies. You are invited to join “St. Mary’s City colonists” for a candlelight walking tour as they mark the passing of a local innkeeper. Discover how 17th-century Marylanders viewed death and the funeral practices that marked its occurrence. During the one-hour program visitors will encounter relatives of the deceased and be offered refreshments like those served during a 17th century “watch” or wake. They will join a funeral procession to Chapel Field, where mourners have come to pay their respects and preparations for a final resting place are underway. Jovial moments will punctuate this somber occasion as this individual's life and times are recalled. Life will go on. The program is intended for adult visitors and admission is $10. Reservations are required. Please call 240-895-4979 or e-mail abkuehn@smcm.edu for reservations or more information.

The Point Lookout Lighthouse Complex was officially turned over to the State of Maryland in 2006, and is now part of the Point Lookout State Park, located in Scotland, MD. At this time, only the lighthouse is open for public tours.

Two types of tours are offered: daytime tours and nighttime paranormal investigations. No reservations are required for the daytime open house events. The paranormal nighttime tours are by reservation only. For further information or to register for an upcoming paranormal event, please e-mail our Director of Paranormal Investigations, Kim Hammond at: Kim@easternparanormalresearch.com.

Open house events are held on the first Saturday of the month from April through November.

Paranormal investigation nights are tentatively scheduled and those dates as well as the complete calendar can be viewed at: Point Lookout Lighthouse Preservation Society site.

All scheduled events are subject to cancellation for inclement weather; if in doubt, we recommend that you check the DNR website or call the park at (301)-872-5688 to confirm. Please note that fees are subject to change and are for admittance to the park. Admittance to the lighthouse is free, but donations to help with the preservation efforts are greatly appreciated. Volunteers Needed - Can You Dig It?

The planning seeds have been laid and are now taking root for Sotterley Plantation’s new event which will be in full bloom next spring!  The 1st annual Garden Fair will take place on April 25-26, 2009 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.  This event will feature guest speakers, vendors, demonstrations, children’s activities and more. This one-of-a-kind event will certainly be a hit with the avid gardeners (and even the occasional gardeners) in Southern Maryland

With the tremendous amount of pre-event cultivation work to be done, we need volunteers! Much of the work can be done from home, and some of the jobs will include such tasking as making advance contacts via phone/e-mail and chairing or aiding such sub-committees as advertising, vendors, speakers, demos, children’s activities, entertainment, etc.

Even those whose thumbs are not exactly green can help!

For more info, contact Karen Tippett at 301-373-2280 or events@sotterley.org

Remember – no help is too big or small!
