Fall Events at Historic St. Mary’s City
Fall is a special season at Historic St. Mary’s City, one of America’s most beautiful historic places. It’s the season for wildflowers, wild fowl, and knockout vistas of fall foliage reflected in the St. Mary’s River. Autumn events at HSMC spotlight the local environment, different aspects of the colonial experience, and the season. Join us for one or all!
October 8 -- Colonial Times Workshop Series: Textiles. Learn How to Spin Wool. 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Want to get an early start on winter’s knitted fashion accessories? In colonial times you’d be shearing the sheep to spin the yarn you’ll knit for next winter. This hands-on workshop will teach participants how to spin yarn with a drop spindle and great wheel, tools available in the 17th century. You will receive sample material and be able to continue to learn to spin yarn at home. Ages: 12 - adult. Fee: non-members $20.00 per person, members $15 per person, includes supplies and full day museum admission. Space limited; advance registration required. October 15 & 16 - Civil War Comes to St. Mary’s. 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (concert and dance at 7:30 p.m.) Experience wartime in the Old and New Worlds with living history activities that provide a glimpse of two Civil Wars - the American Civil War and the English Civil War. Military drilling, cannon & weapons firings, music shows, fashion shows, and hands-on experiences make this a great experience for the whole family. Admission charged. After hours on Saturday, join us for an evening concert and dance. Home Front will perform authentic American Civil War era music and dance mistress Kathleen Norvell will teach 17th-century dance. Doors open 7:00 p.m., entertainment begins at 7:30 p.m. Snacks and light refreshments will be sold on site. Admission: $15 per person. October 22 -- Colonial Times Workshop Series: Textiles- Too Hot to be Felt. 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Do you enjoy making things from scratch? Before the development of modern cool-to-the-touch cookware, food was prepared in metal and clay pots, which got extremely hot. This hands-on workshop will demonstrate and teach participants how to manipulate wool fabric to create an item you’ll cherish -- a handy felted hot pad, mitt, or cozy you’ll be proud to use in your kitchen. Ages: 9 – Adult. Fee: Non-members $20.00 per person, members $15 per person, the fee includes supplies and full day museum admission. Space limited; advance registration required. October 29 -- Grave Matters. 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Experience a unique nighttime atmosphere while you walk historical paths in a theatrical event that’s the perfect Halloween treat. Maryland colonists will provide a glimpse into 17th-century life and death in a fun and possibly haunting event! Fee: Non-members $20, members $15, children under 5 years are free! November 12 -- Colonial Times Workshop Series: Animal Tracking and Woods Lore. 10:00 a.m. – 12 noon. Put your nose to the tree and ear to the ground. Learn hunting techniques that the Yaocomaco Indians used in St. Mary’s City in the early 1600’s. Meet at the Woodland Indian Hamlet. Ages: 9-12 with a parent. Fee: non-members $20.00 per person, members $15 per person. The fee includes supplies and full day museum admission. Space limited; advance registration required. November 25 & 26 -- Hearth and Home in Early Maryland. 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Explore the colonial table & discover how Maryland’s first settlers celebrated the end of the harvest season. Help churn butter, shuck beans, grind corn and learn about the many tasks required to cook the family feast over a 17th Century hearth. Admission charged. Visitors contributing a non-perishable food item will receive a $1 discount off admission benefiting the Southern Maryland Food Bank. December 7 - Community Concert & Open House. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., concert begins at 7:00 p.m. Kick off your holiday season in the State House with harmonies by St. Maries Musica and inspiring decorations by the Mistress Brent Garden Club. December 17 -- Colonial Times Workshop Series: Evergreen Arrangements. 10:00 a.m. – 12 noon. Deck your halls with boxwood and holly. Learn how to assemble a beautiful arrangement for either your table or your door. All materials are provided including Historic St. Mary’s City boxwood and a wealth of other greens and accessories. Fee: non-members $30 per person; members $25 per person. Space limited; advance registration required.
