We recommend a few avenues to explore different careers and choose a major. We’d love to get to know you as you make decisions about your career path and offer guidance along the way. Also, we will introduce you to alumni who are happy to discuss the path they’ve chosen, so you can hear firsthand what your future might hold. We can help you set up a phone call or meeting through the programs outlined below.
The St. Mary’s College of Maryland Professional Network Program
The St. Mary’s Professional Network program connects students with seasoned professionals to share professional experiences and advice through an informational interview. We currently have professionals with backgrounds in law, museums, higher education, environment, business, and more! You can select alumni listings within HireSMCM system and request a call. If you are a student and are interested in participating in this program, contact the Career Development Center to schedule a training or attend the next Professional Communication clinic listed in HireSMCM.
MicroInternships, our job shadow program
The MicroInternship Program allows current SMCM students of all majors to explore potential career fields by pairing them with host organizations for a 1-2 day job shadowing experience. You’ll need to participate in our Professional Communication clinic before applying as well as our Resume Clinic (or submit an approved resume); look for the next dates in HireSMCM. Applications are due early in the fall semester, please visit our MicroInternships page for more details.
We can meet with you to discuss your career path and help give you clarity around your next step. To get started, make an appointment or stop in during Open Advising hours (Monday-Friday from 1:00 – 3:00 pm) to meet with Career Development staff. Selecting a major can be a difficult task that will require time and effort, and we are here to help you select a major that you will enjoy and are interested in. We recommend that you take advantage of the liberal arts education you will get at St. Mary’s and take classes in a variety of disciplines, join one of the many clubs and organizations on campus, and take one of our self-assessments to identify strengths and potential areas of interest.
