Community Service Outreach Fellow
Office of Student Activities

Name of Hiring Contact: Sola Ogundele
Title of Hiring Contact: Coordinator of Service and Social Change
Email: ojogundele@smcm.edu
Phone: 240-895-4209

Student Responsibilities/Benefits:

Given the increasing demand for service opportunities and support within the college, the Office of Student Activities needs more student support staff to help coordinate resources and support between student clubs, school sponsored service events, and outside organizations.  The student selected for this position would be given numerous responsibilities including research, community outreach, and event planning.

Research: The fellow would be asked to research new opportunities with service organizations in the tri-county region that the students and campus community would want to become more involved with during the school year. These new contacts would help to create more interest within the college to become more service minded and civically engaged with a wide range of diverse options.  This research and subsequent interactions with service organizations off campus would give the school a more positive image in the wider community.

Community Outreach: The fellow will be involved with outreach programs for both on and off campus service organizations to help increase awareness of service opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to engage in. This would include being a resource for these clubs and organizations to help with advertising events and details over a wide median of sources including email, posters, and Facebook.  Since many organizations neither have the time or manpower to advertise their events to the campus community, the fellow would help alleviate both of these problems by being available to use marketing strategies to advertise the event and to provide a point person to distribute the information to a wider audience.

Event Planning: The fellow would be expected to help with event planning for clubs and organizations that may need some additional support.  This includes but not limited to being the point person for the Christmas in April Annual Benefit Auction.  For Christmas in April, the fellow will be responsible with soliciting gifts to be auctioned, selecting and managing student volunteers, and overseeing the night’s activities.  He/she will also be expected to represent Student Activities on the St. Mary’s Arboretum Association and will work directly with the Arboretum Committee and Lesley Urgo to organize and publicize events including plantings and beautification projects.  The fellow will also be expected to coordinate with the other staff members of the Student Affairs Division, at the direction of the Coordinator of Service and Social Change, to help other offices with projects and events (service in nature) that may need additional support.

Student Qualifications:

The Office of Student Activities is looking for an applicant with strong communication skills, both oral and written, that will allow them to be able to communicate with both campus and outside groups.  Since he/she will have to contact outside organizations, Student Activities is looking for someone who would be a strong representative for the college.  It is also expected that they are self-motivated and have a strong work ethic that would allow them to work on projects with little direction.  The fellow will also need to demonstrate a desire to help better the school and community through service projects.
