Student Responsibilities/Benefits:

The overall purpose of the Fellowship is to enhance the Writing Center’s services to a designated group of students: either international students, science writers, or SMP students. The designated group will depend on the background and qualifications of the strongest candidate. The Fellow will contact members of the group, learn about their needs for writing support, organize workshops and other activities that are responsive to those needs, and compile and generate useful handouts and other resources. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to assist the Writing Center in other ways, which may include publicity, organizing events, and general tutoring.

As part of the Writing Center’s staff of peer tutors, the Writing Fellow will receive ongoing training in tutoring and writing strategies at weekly meetings, in addition to specialized, one-on-one training related to his or her particular responsibilities.

Student Qualifications:

This position requires exemplary written and oral expression skills, a professional and approachable demeanor, and excellent organizational ability, reliability and initiative. The successful applicant will also have at least one of the following sets of qualifications:

  • experience in any kind of peer tutoring or mentoring;
  • experience and interest in scientific or technical writing;
  • intercultural expertise--which might include a strong background in a second language and/or experience living or studying outside the United States, or coursework such as EDUC 394 or 495 (ESL Across the Curriculum, Parts One and Two) --together with a strong interest in working with inbound and outbound international students; or
  • experience in conducting, or assisting peers with, independent research.
