"Burning
Down the House: A Case Study in Forensic Instrumental Analysis "

This case was developed for an instrument analysis
laboratory to illustrate the usefulness of GC-MS analysis, to introduce
static headspace analysis and introduce basic principles of forensic
science. The case centers on a suspected arson which claims the
life of the victim inside. Because of the relationship between the
principal forensic investigator and the deceased, the investigator
becomes the lead suspect. Armed with basic chemistry knowledge,
students are tasked with developing a methodology to determine whether
or not the fire was the result of arson, and whether or not the
charges leveled against the primary forensic investigator are credible.
