"Structural
Identification of an Antimicrobial Compound from the Thermal Decomposition
of Reducing Sugars in the Presence of Oxygen"
Richard Counselman
Mentor: Dr. Andrew S. Koch
St. Mary's College of Maryland, 2004- 2005
Richard worked on the isolation and identification
of an organic compound formed during the heat sterilization of a
glucose-phosphate buffer solution. This compound has the ability
to kill certain bacterial agents such as Escherichia Coli. High-field
NMR was used to elucidate various structural features.
