Students take Action in the Gulf

This past Labor Day weekend, five chemistry students accompanied Professor Larsen on a tour of the coastlines of Mississippi and Louisiana to learn more about the effects of the BP oil spill. They brought back samples of the beach sand and water to study back at St. Mary's and to further their understanding of the many environmental issues facing the gulf.

Last Spring, 12 St. Mary's students attended the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Fransico. Eight presented their work and we all met after Tabitha Clem's ('05) talk. Tabitha was just finishing up her Ph.D. at UC Berkeley.
Relatively small classes, lots of one-on-one interactions and great undergraduate research opportunities allow the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at SMCM to offer an outstanding education to our students. We offer degrees in biochemistry and chemistry, with an American Chemical Society (ACS) certified track in chemistry. Our close proximity to Washington D.C. and Baltimore, coupled with our excellent reputation, has led to many of our students finding jobs and internships in the sciences. The diverse research opportunities at St. Mary’s help make our students competitive for acceptance into the best graduate programs and provides us with the opportunity to teach our students skills that would not typically be available in an undergraduate program. It isn’t hard to see why we are so proud of our students’ accomplishments; we have a challenging curriculum, provide them with the tools to succeed, and nurture them along the way. We are the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and we have our students’ best interests in mind.
