Poetry and spirituality come together in an interfaith residential conference, "Poetry and the Journey Toward God" led by Michael Glaser and Kathleen Henderson Staudt.
Based on programs previously offered at Washington National Cathedral's Cathedral College, this conference will explore some of the ways that poetry, metaphor, and reflection can help open us to a more profound experience of the sacred, and draw us more deeply into prayer. Conference sessions will invite participants to engage with a variety of poetic voices such as Lucille Clifton, John Donne, Jane Hirschfield, Hafiz, Denise Lavertov, Marge Piercy, John O'Donohue, Mary Oliver, Rumi, William Stafford, and David Whyte, to show how poetry can inform and enhance our work of leadership and proclamation.
Join poet and spiritual director Kathleen Henderson Staudt and Maryland's Former Poet Laureate, Michael S. Glaser, assisted by the insight of scholar Dana Greene, the historical explorations and understandings of Henry Miller, and the reflective practices of Kathleen W. Glaser (based on the work of Parker Palmer) for this profound week of creativity, exploration, and insight designed especially for clergy, teachers, and other leaders.
The week will also include afternoon writing workshops to help you develop and express your own poetic voice for writing, preaching, and leading.
The conference will take place on the campus of St. Mary's College of Maryland in Historic St. Mary's City on the banks of the St. Mary's River.
The conference fee includes tuition and meals. Accommodations on campus are also available. Please see the registration form for price information.
