Course Descriptions
The SMCM Project Management Certificate Program consists of the following five core courses and applications lab. There are no prerequisites for the series. Professional Development Units (PDUs) and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for the program are awarded upon successful completion.
Managing Projects
20 PDUs and 2.0 CEUs
- Introduces project management to attendees
- Provides an overview of fundamentals and project integration
- Serves to bring all attendees up to a common starting point for all subsequent courses
Project Management Leadership
20 PDUs and 2.0 CEUs
Explores the areas of:
- Human resource management
- Communications
- Team dynamics
- Conflict and interpersonal aspects of project management
Project Integration
20 PDUs and 2.0 CEUs
- Processes required to develop key project deliverables including the charter, scope statement and the project management plan
- Activities required to execute, monitor, control project implementation and ensure integrated change management
Scope, Cost & Time Management
20 PDUs and 2.0 CEUs
- Examines the identification of customer requirements and the resources needed to complete a project or manage an environment
- Focuses on the cost and schedule aspects of a project, baseline establishment, control, monitoring, and reporting
Risk, Procurement & Quality
20 PDUs and 2.0 CEUs
- Focuses on the risk management process for a project: identification, quantification, response development, response control. Covers the contract management process and procurement phases
- Focuses on where quality has been, where it has moved to, and where it is headed as a process (planning, assurance, control)
Applications Lab in Project Management
24 PDUs and 2.4 CEUs
- A highly interactive course that uses work group/teams to simulate a project from early project initiation through closeout phases
- This lab allows students to analyze real world situations using their new skills.
In all the courses the topic of professional ethics is addressed.
