When we were learning the craft of rowing, we belonged to Buzz. He was the artist molding us to his form. In Florida, I once rode in the launch for part of one practice while Buzz was choosing the first boat. I sat in the bow while he drove the launch, calculated stroke cadences, switched oarsmen between the two eights, and wrote notes about each of us: all the while laughing and cursing to himself. We were his creation. On the water we came to see ourselves through his eyes, molded as we were in his image. Once we had achieved the basic form, however, we were no longer just reflections of his art.
Individuals reemerged to form the character of the boat.

Coaching Staff
From its inception the team was almost exclusively coached by fellow St. Mary's students until the team added two SMC crew alumni to their coaching staff. Paul and Kristin Conlin are the head coaches of the team and work in conjunction with volunteers in the community and students to train the team. All coaches work under the directions of the Executive Board and collaborate to satisfy the club mission statement.
Paul Conlin Fairfield, CT
Paul Conlin graduated from St. Mary's College in 2000. Paul began rowing his freshman year with St. Mary's College Crew Team and Saugatuck Rowing Club in Connecticut. He assumed a volunteer coaching position with the men's team post graduation. After taking a couple years off from coaching Paul was asked to return in the fall of 2006. An active competitor, Paul rows and races his single shell (1x), and races with various doubles partners (2x).
Kristin Conlin Delmar, NY
Three years of high school sweep rowing with the Albany Rowing Club and three years with the SMC crew team prepared Kristin for coaching the men's novice team in 2003 through 2005. After graduating in 2005, Kristin trained and rowed with Capital Rowing Club in Washington, DC in the competitive sculling program and currently trains in her single (1x) throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Kristin returned to the team as a coach in the fall of 2007.
Ryan Whelpley, Marisa Guarinello, and Matthew Wells, assistant coaches
Ryan and Matt hail from Mid-Western programs and Marisa rowed and coached with several East Coast rowing programs. All have years of coaching and rowing experience at the collegiate and masters level. They generously give their time and knowledge to the team and have offered innumberable contributions to the growth of the team.
