Guidelines for Providing Computers to Visiting Faculty

The AE&T has written guidelines for department chairs that need to provide computers to visiting faculty. These guidelines are based on the need for SMCM to support the teaching and learning needs of all faculty members, including those who are here for only a limited time. It is important for us to meet those needs in a way that is also efficient for everyone involved, including CTSS.

Guidelines for Providing Computers to Visiting Faculty at SMCM

  1. Visiting faculty include sabbatical replacements or any other faculty teaching full-time or part-time for at least one semester.
  2. The chair of the academic department in which the visiting faculty member will teach should assess the computer and media equipment available in the classroom(s) where the visitor will teach. Please contact the Learning Technology Support Coordinator for assistance if needed.
  3. If a computer is available in the classroom(s) assigned, the visitor will have access to a desktop computer within the current life cycle (1-4 years) in their department office. By default, the computer will be running the Microsoft Windows Operating system. If a computer running the Mac Operating system is requested, CTSS will accommodate the request if one is available.
  4. If a computer is not available in the classroom(s) assigned, the visitor may be issued a laptop by the department chair. The department chair is responsible for its return
  5. CTSS staff will provide assistance with set-up and problem solving for these laptops.
  6. Department chairs should plan as far ahead as possible for the needs of Visiting Faculty for each academic year. If you anticipate the need for a laptop for 2-3 years consecutively the department chair should include this in their annual equipment request. If you expect only occasional need for a laptop please discuss your need with the Learning Technology Coordinator as early as possible so access to a laptop can be arranged.
  7. Please plan to discuss your needs with the Learning Technology Coordinator in advance to coordinate your requests with CTSS or discuss alternatives. Departments that want to provide a laptop to be used by Visiting Faculty must include the request in their annual equipment request to the Dean of the Faculty.
