Diary of the Comptroller Schaefer Intern, Anya Katrinic
June 3, 2004~ Annapolis
I am writing from inside the
Louis L. Goldstein Treasury Building in downtown Annapolis. This has been
my first week in Comptroller William Donald Schaefer's Office of
Communications, and it's been great. My first day was a series of tours-
the office, the building, the building complex, downtown Annapolis, and
the state officials' parking lots. I also met a bunch of people. The other
people in my office are also very nice, and they know their stuff.
I assumed I would be assigned menial tasks, but that has not been the case at all. Among other things, I have helped a co-worker prepare to write an organizational newsletter, and today I wrote a trip itinerary that the comptroller and his senior staff will use next week. I also have another itinerary in-the-works for the near future. In the long term, I will be conducting a Tax Publications survey, and will begin compiling information about the Comptroller’s years as Mayor of Baltimore City. I'm also supposed to be getting a few days in Governor Ehrlich's office, and maybe the MD Department of Agriculture as well. Annapolis has been a really cool experience; downtown has little specialty shops as well as the government buildings. A lot of the people I've seen on my lunch breaks are state political celebrities. On my first day I saw first lady Kendell Ehrlich with her son, Drew, and new baby, Josh; I walked right by her and didn't realize it. I am hoping to meet the Comptroller soon as well. June 22, 2004~ Annapolis The highlight of my third week was attending the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Maryland Food Bank. I invited to attend because I coordinated the itinerary. It was a great opportunity for me to see "the fruits of my labor", and I really enjoyed the ceremony. Also last week, I went to the Governor's Press Office and met his former campaign manager (and current Press Secretary) Paul Schurick. His job is the epitome of an awesome career; in the middle of our introduction he left for South Africa with the Lieutenant Governor. Today, I'm going to shadow the Deputy Press Secretary, and we'll follow Governor Ehrlich to a number of events.
