William Donald Schaefer Internship for Government Service
About
In 2003, the Center for the Study of Democracy created the Schaefer Internship for Government Service. The competition is open to current St. Mary's College of Maryland students who wish to pursue a career in government service.
The goal of the program is to allow undergraduates a hands-on experience in public policy with the hope that they will be inspired to choose public service as a calling. This summer internship carries a stipend of $1000 and assistance towards placement within a local, state or federal agency related to the winner's field of interest. Recipients have worked in a variety of public service jobs that included: working for the Maryland Department of Health, the Maryland Department of the Environment, the Department of Education, and working for a St. Mary’s County Judge on the experimental Teen Drug Court.
Recent recipients of this internship have had great and varied experiences working within government agencies. Interns have attended Congressional committee meetings and year-end reviews with the Board of Education. They have also worked in the field, from physically revitalizing inner-city schools with the Believe in Our Schools program, to assisting in the removal of invasive plants species with the Maryland Department of the Environment.
