St. Mary's Votes!
Since its inception in 2004, the club has registered over 850 young people to vote in State and National elections. In 2008, the club expanded its role in civic engagement to include working as election and poll judges during primary and general elections.
Internships
The Center for the Study of Democracy currently offers St. Mary's College students four separate, paid internship opportunities every year: the Schaefer Internship for Government Service, the Schaefer Internship in the Office of the Comptroller, and the Schaefer Legislative Internship. Each of these internship awards carries a separate stipend of $1000.
Recent recipients of these internships have been involved in a wide variety of projects. Interns have occupied research-oriented jobs within governmental offices in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Annapolis that have allowed them to gain a firm understanding and appreciation for the inner-workings of the various governmental agencies. They have also worked in the field, from physically revitalizing inner-city schools with the Believe in Our Schools program, to assisting in the removal of invasive plants species with the Maryland Department of the Environment.
The Schaefer Internship for Government Service is offered each year during the summer, and is designed to allow undergraduates a hands-on experience in public policy and service.
A second internship opportunity is for St. Mary's students to work during the summer in the Office of the Comptroller in Annapolis. Interns have been responsible for conducting surveys, working to get those who have failed to file taxes into compliance with the law, working up itineraries and developed speaking points for the Comptroller, and giving presentations on their work to the Governor of Maryland.
The spring Annapolis Legislative Internship gives St. Mary's students the opportunity to represent their college during the legislative session. The intern will research and summarize bills, manage legislative hearing schedules, attend hearings and may have the opportunity to testify at hearings.
About the William Donald Schaefer Internship Program
These internship programs are made possible through the generous donations from Terry Meyerhoff Rubenstein, Henry A. Rosenberg Jr., and friends of William Donald Schaefer. William Donald Schaefer has served his community, state and nation with distinction for more than half a century. He entered politics in 1955 as a Baltimore City Councilman and became the Mayor of Baltimore in 1971. He served as Governor of Maryland from 1987 to 1995.
As Governor, Donald Schaefer championed the designation of St. Mary's College of as Maryland's Public Honors College and advocated a state-of-the-art science building that is now named for him. In his role as trustee of the College, he has played a key role in leading St. Mary's into the 21st century. He served as the Comptroller of Maryland from 1999-2007.
As a lasting tribute to the Governor's many contributions to the College and the state, the William Donald Schaefer Internship Program honors his lifetime commitment to achievement in government service.
