MAT Application Process

 

Please note to applicants for the 2015-2016 MAT year: 

  1. The essay prompt/requirement is changing and will be updated shortly. Please do not complete any essay based on the prompt in the current PDF application. 
  2. If you are a current SMCM student, there will be a meeting early in the Fall semester to discuss the application process. 

 

 

  1. Submit the application, completed and signed, along with the required essay, and a $50.00 non-refundable fee to the Office of Admissions
  2. Arrange with all institutions of higher education to have your official transcripts sent to the Office of Admissions. 
    • If you are a current St. Mary's College of Maryland student completing an undergraduate degree, submit a transcript that includes your course work in progress for the fall term.
  3. Submit scores (or registration form) for ONE of the following tests to the Office of Admissions:
    • SAT: scores of 1100 combined for the critical reading and mathematics sections of the test.
      • If you sumbitted SAT scores to the SMCM Admissions as part of the undegrrad admissions process, you do not need to resubmit; we will be able to access these scores.
    • ACT: combined score of 24.
      • See note above about scores on file with Admissions Office.
    • GRE: combined scores of 1000 (taken before 9/1/11) or 297 (taken after 9/1/11) on math and reading.
    • PRAXIS I scores: pre-professional skills test in reading/writing/math (required if you do not have required score on file for any other test listed above).
      • Register for these tests at www.ets.org and option to have scores sent both to SMCM and MSDE.
  4. Three (3) Letters of Recommendation submitted to the SMCM Office of Admissions:
    • Two (2) faculty members who have taught you in upper-division courses in your major field should send letters of recommendation (using the MAT Reference Form).
    • Someone who has supervised you in interactions with children or young adults submit a general letter of recommendation. 
    • If it has been more than five years since you completed your undergraduate degree and you are unable to solicit such letters, please contact faculty in Educational Studies for other options.
    • NOTE: Education faculty and staff do not write recommendations.

Application and supporting documentation are due to the Office of Admissions by October 1. Admissions decision letters will be mailed by mid-December. Late applications may be considered until April of the cohort year.

If you are not a St. Mary's College of Maryland graduate, an interview is required. Contact the Director of Teacher Education at 240-895-2018.
