As an undergraduate, Kate Chandler attended several large universities before completing her B.A. at New College of Florida. The interactive education she enjoyed in that small, liberal arts setting generated her desire to create similar educational experiences for others. She completed her M.A. and Ph.D. at The Pennsylvania State University with a dissertation in fiction of the Romantic period, but her research has turned to environmental literature. Her scholarship includes work on teaching outdoors and contemporary environmental writers Linda Hogan and Terry Tempest Williams. The anthology she edited, Surveying the Literary Landscapes of Terry Tempest Williams: New Critical Essays, was published in 2003. Questions about landscape, ethics, and aesthetics factor into her upper level nature course offerings. She also greatly enjoys teaching seminars focused on narration and the novel. Outside of the English department, she interacts with students in Environmental Studies, through which she has mentored cross-disciplinary SMPs, advised the Environmental Living Learning Center, and joined with students and faculty engaged in interdisciplinary ideas and activities.
