Published annually since 1998, SlackWater is a journal of Southern Maryland oral history. Previous issues have explored St. George Island, Cedar Point, tobacco farming, and the Maryland oyster wars. Founded by former Professor of English Andrea Hammer, SlackWater is currently run by Adjunct Associate Professor of Anthropology Julia King. Supported by the SlackWater Center, a research consortium funded in part by a grant frfom the Mellon Foundation, SlackWater is researched and written by students taking Anthroplogy 338 (formerly English 395: Cultural Journalism). SlackWater may be purchased at the St. Mary's Campus Store, and is also available at the College library. As the student-run
literary magazine at St. Mary's College, The Avatar
is dedicated to publishing the highest quality of art and creative
writing that the college community affords. Every week throughout
the academic year, submissions are reviewed anonymously for
unbiased consideration and discussed by those who choose to
come and participate in the open review board meetings. The
fall and spring editions are a culmination of months of this
process, and a small representation of the excellent art and
writing this college has produced. Primarily showcasing student
work, past editions have also highlighted some of the creative
work of faculty and staff as well.
