The DeSousa-Brent Scholars Program and the 19th annual River Concert Series welcome masters of jazz improvisation Paul Murphy (drums) and Larry Willis (piano) for the opening performance of the River Series Finale Weekend, a jazz and heritage festival. Dominic Fragman ’07, spotlights the congruency of jazz and democracy—the role of improvisation in the expansion of freedom. Murphy and Willis perform a concert of total improvisation with guest performances by poet Jere Carroll and Fragman on drums.

Free pizza or bring your own lunch! Tamra Seal works in sculpture, installation, photography, and video to interpret California culture. The work builds on the historical Minimalism and California Light & Space movements by adding to them elements of California pop-culture, architecture, geology and iconic cinema imagery. She uses fluorescent materials in conjunction with natural and artificial light to project and extend the work’s form into the viewer’s space. The physical and projected elements of the work become metaphorical characters…
