The DeSousa-Brent Scholars Program and the 19th annual River Concert Series welcome masters of jazz improvisation Paul Murphy (drums) and Larry Willis (piano) for the opening performance of the River Series Finale Weekend, a jazz and heritage festival. Dominic Fragman ’07, spotlights the congruency of jazz and democracy—the role of improvisation in the expansion of freedom. Murphy and Willis perform a concert of total improvisation with guest performances by poet Jere Carroll and Fragman on drums.

The African and African Diaspora Studies program (AADS) at St. Mary’s College of Maryland will host its first annual fall symposium on Friday, September 22 and Saturday, September 23. “From Slavery to Freedom: The Struggle for Civic Virtue at St. Mary’s and Beyond” will give special attention to recently discovered evidence that St. Mary’s Female Seminary owned slaves during the nineteenth century. Alice Fluery and Arthur S. Zamanakos Noon Concert Series Presents Brian Ganz Brian Ganz kicks off his noon series at the college with a recital featuring little known works of Chopin alongside perennial favorites. In this program, entitled "Chopin the Teacher, Chopin the Student," Brian will play the rarely heard Trois Nouvelles Etudes and the virtually unknown Fugue, along with the beloved Fantasy-Impromptu, among other works.

Alice Fluery and Arthur S. Zamanakos Noon Concert Series Presents Brian Ganz Brian Ganz continues his exploration of little known works of Chopin with a program entitled "Chopin the Traveler, Chopin the Virtuoso." Brian will play Chopin's rarely heard Tarantella and Bolero, showing influences on Chopin from Italy and Spain, respectively, and then turn to six of Chopin's most beautiful Etudes from Op. 25, including the colossal "Winter Wind."
