Washington D.C. curator and SMCM alum Jayme McLellan will talk about her role as curator for the current exhibition at the Boyden Gallery Living on the Land Vol. 2., an exhibition presenting diverse perspectives on the relationship to the land on which humans live.

Jayme McLellan is a curator, gallery director, educator, and artist. For twenty years she has curated the work of artists in galleries, museums, and arts organizations in the U.S., Canada, Europe, including numerous spaces in Washington, DC. She founded her gallery Civilian Art Projects in 2006. She has published essays and articles about artists and presented lectures and workshops at the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, the SCCA–Ljubljana and the Igor Zabel Association for Culture and Theory, and received the Dorothy Liskey Wampler Professorship of Art Fellowship at James Madison University.

An essay about her career is included in Living & Sustaining a Creative Life: Artist as Culture Producer, edited by Sharon Louden, published by Intellect Books, and distributed by University of Chicago Press. McLellan is the co-curator and project manager of HARD ART DC 1979 (Akashic Books) most recently on view at the agnes b. gallery in Paris, France. Prior to this it was on exhibit at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Before founding Civilian Art Projects, McLellan co-founded Transformer, a non-profit arts organization in Washington, DC, and cut her teeth at DC Arts Center as a fundraiser where she realized her first independent curatorial projects. She is adjunct faculty in the graduate and undergraduate art department at Georgetown University, and a practicing visual artist.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. McLellan has taught classes on curatorial practice in the graduate programs at Corcoran College of Art + Design, the Maryland Institute College of Art, and Georgetown University.
