“On Contentious Grounds”
conceived and directed by Daniel Bear Davis
March 3-4 @ 8 PM
March 5 @ 2 PM
Bruce Davis Theater, Montgomery Hall Fine Arts Center
ON CONTENTIOUS GROUNDS is a devised movement theater piece developed from interviews with Palestinian occupants of the West Bank about their experiences of movement in their daily lives and ancestral histories. How do borders shape bodies? Borders – in the form of walls, laws, guns, language, access to information, and rigidified memories – shape our mobility and experience of the world.
Students will complement the material arising from these interviews with material developed from their own stories of migration, displacement, and containment. By alternating between the contested borders of Israel and Palestine and St. Mary’s own complex history of contested borders, we create an intimate reckoning with the privileges and impossibilities of movement in our world.
Some performance material has been contributed directly by Palestinian performance artists accepting the offer of St. Mary’s students to act as surrogate bodies to amplify their otherwise muted voice and message.
